Friends of the Civic Center Library

Who We Are

Friends of the Civic Center Library consist of approximately 60 dues paid members and an all-volunteer board consisting of:

  • Shelley Cooper

  • Penny Wells

Once a year the board hosts the Civic Center Friends Annual Membership Meeting at the library with a wine and cheese reception followed by a speaker and topics the interest/business. The board meets on an as-needed basis throughout the year.

What We Do

The original purpose of our chapter was to support the Civic Center Library, and it still is, but more financially than politically. This is done through the presentation of an annual “Wish List” by the branch manager, Eva Patterson, to the board, reflecting the needs of various areas of the library: California Room, Children’s Room, Teen area, and Adult Reading Room. We have agreed to fund shelving, furniture, machines, reading materials, plants, and activities. The board raises money for these projects through income from dues, donations and involvement at The Book Place (the Friends’ fabulous used bookstore in Novato).

The Book Place

Members of the Civic Center Friends chapter volunteer at The Book Place in order to help raise funds for the library. Volunteering at the Book Place is not only fun and interesting but gives one first crack at the hundreds of books that flow through there every month. Contact Ellen Stein, sfskyway@hotmail.com , if this appeals to you.

March at the Book Place

We’re celebrating Women’s History Month! Choose any NON-Fiction book about a woman, women’s issues, or anything related to women, and get 50% off! They’re all around the store: Art, Sports, Entertainment, Music, True Adventure (you get the idea). Celebrate women, their lives, and their contribution.

We also have a sale on Romance; small paperbacks are just 50¢ each all month. It’s a great time to stock up.

We take Requests - send us an email, we’ll look for the book to save time, or, if it’s a book we don’t have in stock, get on our waitlist, and we’ll let you know when it comes in.

The Book Place is operated by the Friends of the Marin County Free Library, a nonprofit volunteer organization. All proceeds are used for special programs, needs, and materials for the Marin County Free Libraries.
